Breaking Up the Back Porch

Last weekend Beth and I along with Sean, our youngest son, and Grant our nephew, spent all day Saturday breaking apart a concrete porch on the backside of the house with a jackhammer we rented. We have some sill damage on the same western side of the house and over the years settling has cause the slope of the concrete to incline toward the house, which caused dampness and some rotting along the sill and top plate areas. Another problem we had with the porch was when there is a greater amount of humidity in the air water always formed on the surface. It seemed like we could never keep it dry.

We took the broken concrete and put the small pieces on the driveway where we had some erosion and the larger pieces we put in to semi-dry creek bed that also has some erosion problems. The work was fairly back breaking, but the jackhammer was really worth the price of the rental. At $55 it was fairly reasonable. Everyone tried the jackhammer within a minute got the hang if it.

Once it is completely removed, our plan is to use pressure treated wood to make the new decking, sitting on small concrete piers, and extend the porch along the whole length of the house. Then over the next few years will enclose it so it has small wall around it and screening on the top.
