Getting Caught Back Up on the Weblog
Wow almost a year since we updated the web log. Well hopefully we’ll be updating it more often as we get things kicked into high gear once I get back home in May and we move forward with our plans.
Update: The House
Well the house completely finished, except for some trim painting and picture hanging. Unfortunately we don’t have any pictures to post, hopefully we get to that soon, but we are really happy with the finished work.
The last thing we had installed was the propane generator, so now we are good to go if the power should go out, which it does during the winter and occasionally in the summer. It’s a great feeling having the outdoor wood burner and the propane generator during the winter because we know we'll always have heat, hot water, and electricity. It was definitely worth cutting costs in other areas and saving to get the generator for the renovation.
We did have some problems this winter. Due to the volume of snow we received our gutters got damaged. However if we had “snow jacks” installed on this metal roof this wouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately the roofer we went through was not the “best” nor “responsive” and didn’t advise us to have them installed, so we’ll get another company to install the jacks and repair the gutters ($$$).
On other point worth mentioning is our need to have good gutters. We collect our water off of our roof, so when you consider hiring a roofer make sure they know how to install gutters correctly so they capture all the water. Again, our roofing subcontractor didn't or a least didn't put the time into the job to do it right. Today less than year since having the gutters install we have leaks at almost every corner, so again that means more work and money, plus lost water.
This subcontracting problems are associated with any house construction or renovation especially being in a rural area, however overall we were very fortunate to have the group of subcontractors that we did. It sinks though having such a lousy roofer when the roof and gutters are critical to the house, but we’ll get through it. The rest of the house and utilities were installed very well so in that we count ourselves fortunate.
Anyway, we just wanted to get this up there, and for our family, we’ll be posted more often, so be looking for it in the near future.
Regards!
