Our replacement egg layers arrived today; 25 Rhode Island Reds we purchased from Ridgway Hatchery. We lost our Black Stars to a raccoon last winter. These 25 will give us plenty of eggs plus a few extras.

What made you pick Rhode Island Reds over any other breed?
We picked the RI Reds because they are a very good dual purpose bird, meaning that they have good meat plus produce good eggs. We could butcher them once they came to weight, but bought them for egg laying. They do well on outside and in the field. In two years we'll butcher them for stewing meat.
