Facelift for the Egg Mobile

With winter over we bought the “Spruce Goose” to the shop to begin its facelift.  We are going to gut the inside and put down a better hardware cloth that will hold up to the chicken manure.

When we first built it we used chicken wire to save a little money, and while it worked for one season, in the second it started to wear away and the chickens began to push through creating large holes.  It seemed like I was fixing it all the time. So I’m going to install a 1 inch square hardware cloth with good quality metal and hopefully the manure will pass through and clean up easier.

The other thing we are going to take out are the fixed roosts. This has made it harder to keep clean as well, so I am going to use a hinges and pins to be able to lift and put the roost against the wall during cleaning.

But we have a little time, as the chicks are still in the brooder. We’ll post the pictures as it comes together.

I love the idea of a hardware cloth floor. We have a solid floor and it creates yet another regular chore of clearing out air the straw on the floor (deep litter). We might have to think about switching our coop over to this type flooring.

It is a little bit expensive but if you can swing it, I highly recommend using it.
