Our Trip to Polyface Farm

Beth and I were extremely fortunate at the end of May to make a trip one weekend to Polyface Farm, owned by the Salatin Family, in Staunton, VA. But this weekend luck was really with us.

The Salatin’s permit anyone to come out to their farm and observe their farming practices, so we decided to make a weekend out of it and explore what we had been reading in Joel Salatin’s book, “You Can Farm.” We called the Salatin’s and Mrs. Salatin said we were more than welcome to come out. So off we went to western Virginia.
When we arrived Joel Salatin had just started a guided tour for a group from the Weston A. Price Foundation. As we were getting out of our car, the group leader from the foundation told us we had to hurry if we going to get on the hay wagon. Beth explained that we were not with the group but were there to look around for ourselves. Then he asked if we wanted to go for the guided tour, which we both gladly accepted. This was extremely fortuitous because we were able to get the tour for free and learn first hand from Joel himself. What could be better!

Well after the talk concluded, Beth and I had some lunch and then returned to the take some additional pictures of the farm. As we were walking to the winter hay feeding shed, we looked at one another and realized how this visit was just one more special event in a series of sublime events that has led us to our move to the farm. Both of us realized that God is truly working through us and has a plan for us. It is amazing.

Well the trip that weekend was great. Seeing the Polyface Farm inspired so much that we are sure we can make this happen. We know the work is going to be hard, but what an opportunity to work with our hands as well as our mind. Truly, this is unbelievable.
